Symbian was a joint venture founded in 1987 by industry leaders Nokia, Motorola and Simens to develop a easy-to-use mobile operating system for mobile phones.
Symbian OS is an open operating system, designed for mobile devices, with associated libraries, user interface frameworks and reference implementations of common tools, produced by Symbian Ltd. It is a descendant of Psion’s EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors.
Symbian OS is written in C++, it is a fully object-oriented operating system. Symbian OS combines middleware with wireless communications through an integrated mailbox and the integration of Java and PIM functionality (agenda and contacts).
Symbian is famouse for its S60 interface which is widely used in Nokia’s smartphone like Nserise phone, N73, N82, N95, N96, and are very popular all over the world. S60 is easy to use and a lot of companies are developing applications which are widely recognised by the end users.
Currently Symbian OS leads the smartphone market with lots of new phones introduced every year.
