China Mobile and Lenovo to release Ophone

China’s PC leading company Lenovo who acquired IBM’s PC department in 2006 confirmed it has been working together with China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile carrier, on another iPhone like smart phone-oPhone.

The new mobile phone is running at OMS (open mobile system), which is an open source smartphone operating system developed by China Mobile. Since the great success of iPhone and Gphone, China Mobile has been considering has its own mobile OS to enhance its competitiveness. The new mobile OS features wireless communications, and will include China Mobile’s own services in it like fetion, a Instant messaging service which surpassed Microsoft’s MSN in the Chinese market and took the second position to QQ, another Instant messaging service.

The specifications of the new phone are not available yet, but we can see from the photo that it has a large touch screen, and hence no keyboard is provided.

Currently the new phone is under research and will be put on the market for sale in the first quarter of 2009. As China Mobile is China’s largest mobile carrier, the introduction of the new mobile phone may be in direct competition to other mobile phone companies in the Chinese market.
